Description
The lava solidifies and the vesicles are contained in the rock. The eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 caused a region what was a haven for planting rice and tropical fruits, into a desert of volcanic debriis and ashes. This handmade item, is the result of creating a new industry by the locals living in the ash-stricken areas, to create a steady livelihood for themselves.
This pumice is a by-product of Mt. Pinatubo's volcanic rocks. Pumice, a highly vesicular pyroclastic igneous rock, also known as pumicile, is formed as pyroclastic material is ejected into the air as a froth containing masses of gas bubbles or vesicles.
